Anchor Locker

The Anchor Locker on our Victoria 34 drains to the bilge, not a system that I am entirely happy with. Any water from the Locker has to drain half the length of the boat to collect in the bilge, not only does this cause dampness in the boat but some of the odours coming from a recovered anchor chain does not make for a happy boat!
I would be most interested to hear if any other members have altered the Anchor Locker to drain overboard and how they achieved this.

Many thanks.

Re: Anchor Locker

Mark, I am about to discover some of those joys for myself, as soon as I secure the bitter end of my new anchor chain. Draining overboard might well be a good option but not being familar with the lay out yet I cannot comment yet.

Best wishes

Re: Anchor Locker

Mark,
We have a similar arrangement in our Frances 34.  We spend quite a bit of time at anchor but have never had an odour problem. The chain when recovered sits almost at water level and so to drain overboard from there could be difficult although I have not undertaken any detailed measurements. Any sea water from the chain joins the rain water from the base of the mast on its way to the bilge. The main problem we experience is from the anchor windless when we have green water over the bow when beating to windward in heavy weather. I look forward to reading about your solution.
Jon.

Re: Anchor Locker

Mark,

I was down on the boat yesterday afternoon and had a chance to investigate the chain locker on Triptych.

The locker drains overboard to starboard but I don't know if this is as built or a retrofit. The drain is about 35cm above water, but might well be closer when 50m of chain and anchor are loaded and fitted.

Opening the inspection hatch a small puddle of water drained out as the floor of the locker is a few inches above the lower limit of the hatch, 50 mls or so of water can't go anywhere and the hatch is watertight, thankfully. I'll get the photos loaded onto a link and post them when available.

Having cleaned up I spliced a bitter end strop onto the ring. Having fed it down through the windlass before hand I'll splice that onto the chain next time.

Re: Anchor Locker

Mark,

These are the links for the photos. Sorry about the focus on the first two, but they show the step behind the hatch cover and the second shows the drain.

The third one shows where the drain appears on the bows.
