Duncan,

We were Dun Laoghaire in July, we cheated and came by ferry with the car, on the way to a family event in Wicklow. We noticed Blue Opal at her mooring as we walked the west pier one afternoon. How did the sailing go last season?

Reading through your impressive record of works, I noticed that in April '22 you had the toerails re-sealed. Did you remove the teak capping to do it? I need to get this done on Mintaka and I would like to know what I'm letting myself (or more likely the yard) in for.

Allo Ian,

I went for the cheap option, scrape back the external bead between hull and teak, then re-seal. We figured it would either work, in which case problem solved, or it wouldn't and it wasn't that much spent to have to then lift off all the hardware and go again.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to really dip the rail with someone else on board, so I've not found out if it worked sad

Ian,

Murray Fraser posted a drawing of the hull to deck joint on the V34 in the Q&A section under his thread "deck fittings".
Seems to be the same as my V30.

Teak toe rail is held down by a series of self tapping screws into the hull to deck joint under teak plugs.
You have to drill out the plugs and remove the screws then the toe rail just lifts off (assuming the sealant has failed). Hull to deck joint is held together by a series of nuts and bolts with backing washers bolting the two flanges together with sealant in between.

Only real issues come if the toe rail and perhaps underlying flanges are damaged.
Its a non trivial and quite time consuming task to cut and machine teak to match the profile.
Not to mention the amount of teak you turn into sawdust!

Also quite time consuming replacing all those teak plugs afterwards.

As they say re-assembly is the reverse of removal.

I used copious quantities of removable UV resistant sikaflex (295) in brown to best match the teak.
Its well worth masking the hull and deck edges before you start to aid the clean up.
Cheap plastic tools are available to make a neat bead and disposable gloves are recommended as its a rather sticky job!

Thanks Duncan and Simon,

I think I might go for the 'cheap' option for now and see how it goes. It's not leaking at the moment but bits of old sealant keep falling out.

Ian,

As you see from the drawing the joint is sealed between the two flanges so unlikely to leak.
The sealant on the teak capping (at least in my opinion) is there to stop water being trapped beneath causing rot.

Blue Opal has been having starter motor issues for a while now - press button, loud click, no diesel roar.

Research came up with "yes, Yanmar engines of that era can do that, try putting a relay in the circuit".

So I did. Season will tell if it was the answer.

Club had an open day earlier this year, and I offered up Blue Opal to take folks out. One of the few photos I have of her under sail; reefed main because of people new to sailing and a forecast that included wind coming up.
